Different type of bodyweight exercise

Long before I got real serious into bar/bodyweight/calistehnics type exercise I was into another variety of activity, volleyball.  For a good decade or so of my life volleyball was my sole focus when it came to active recreational activity.  There was period of time where I was playing 3-4 times a week.

Well because of things like travel time, costs and injury, my amount of time playing volleyball over the last several years has dwindled to just above nothing.  The last time I played was late in June 2011.

Well I picked up the ball this past weekend for my first tournament of 2012.  I was quite pleased that despite not touching a ball in almost a year, I was still able to step out on the court and perform at a decent level.

Much like my decent success in running/triathlon events, I feel I owe it to my bodyweight training.

Since I started getting serious about bar training a few years ago. I dropped a bunch of weight while gaining functional strength.  These changes seem to allow me to participate in other sporting activities and perform better than expected when taking into consideration the relative lack of attention these other activities receive.

Despite playing in temps hovering around 90 degrees on Saturday I don’t recall ever feeling significantly winded in the least.  I guess the best way to describe it is my body now feels efficient, which helps me in any physical activity, pull up related or not.

That being said I am feeling a bit beat up in the aftermath of the tournament, especially the toes on my left foot.  I smashed them into the side of another player’s foot at the net.  They look broken but I think they are actually intact.

Lesser to Greater, rolling rolling rolling

I had my first shot at hard mode of this month’s BB challenge.  I had missed the gym at lunch so I was anxious to get out there and put up a good showing.

My first set of chin ups went well, I netted 20 reps which I think either sets or ties my all time chin up best.  I wanted to try to truly max out each set instead of cutting each set a bit short to save some energy for the next.

I only managed 8 regular pull ups and 6 behind the neck after that.  I just didn’t have any juice left.

In general this seems to be the same issue that has been limiting my goal of hitting the BBR’s.  MY body does not seem very willing to recover quickly, an absolute necessity for the BBR’s.  Yea I can throw up decent single set numbers but if my rest period in between is very short, my numbers go WAY down.

I will keep experimenting to see if I can find a way to get this old body to bounce back faster.

I have been using my new roller pretty regularly.  The extreme discomfort I felt when I rolled the first time is getting more and more manageable which I assume is a good thing.

Reenergized, new month next challenge

So like many in the bar community, I saw lots of coverage of the 2012 Workout Fest in the Ukraine.  The event had a huge Bar-barian group attending, I think I read a total of 11 were Bar-barians there, including Jay, Lee and Sai from the U.K.  Calisthenics/bar work/body weight exercise is HUGE in the Ukraine and the crowds for the event showed it.  It looked like just an awesome day.

Seeing the amazing physical feats and the excitement surrounding it really helped give me a bit of a kick in the ass as far as my body weight exercise work goes.  It isn’t like I ever stopped but I sort of lost focus when I stopped progressing on my quest for the BBR’s.  It seemed like I hit a point where I just wasn’t getting any better and was hurting myself to boot.

Yesterday I did my first 50/100 (50 pull ups, 100 push ups for time) in a little while and sucked some major wind in doing so.  It still felt good to get one under my belt.

The June challenge for the forums has been posted, it is another Iron Lou creation so you know it will be tough.

I sent a message to Zef asking if maybe we could get some of the NYC Bar-barians to post a monthly challenge video now and then.  I have been asked a few times why we don’t see the crew show up on the forums much at all.  I think it would be a good way to let everyone know they are keeping an eye on what goes down on the forums as well as providing motivation for others to push themselves towards the very high bar the Bar-barians set.

One last shot, roll it out

I made one last attempt at hard mode of this month’s Bar-barian challenge, flying pull ups.  This was the same thing that ripped my right hand open earlier in the month when I stupidly chalked the bar and my hands.  I managed to get 18 reps this time although the last 2 or 3 were pretty anemic.

I’d like to take a shot at increasing my clapping push ups total but both of my elbows are very sore.

I hopped on my parallel bars to try a couple things like a bent arm planche, elbow planches and a odd looking attempt to press to a hand stand that never got there.  It all looked like a pretty big mess so I didn’t even bother to post the video.

I finally got to utilize my new roller last night.  To be honest I was kind of avoiding it just because I know it is painful.  Well it was indeed painful, especially rolling out my IT bands which involved a lot of grimacing and grunting.  However when I was done the lower half of my body did feel better which is the point after all.

Since I started learning the elbow planche a few weeks ago I have pulled it out as a party trick.  It is a move that looks more physically impressive than it is.

I pulled it out at a Memorial Day picnic by the gulf.  I would really like to progress on these type of holds (and handstands) but a combination of nagging aches and pains and shortage of time to devote to exercise are slowing me down.
