bd[1]I know more and more it seems like most of my entries include some sort of whining regarding the various aches, pains and ailments that I deal with in my fitness routine.  Unfortunately it seems to be an unavoidable thing as you try to maintain a decent fitness level as you approach 50 years of age.  To even consider that age number seems surreal to me.

The past 4 days the only organized exercise I did was four circuits of a Century, minus the 40 air squats because my knee hurt.  I followed it up today with a session at the gym that was more about not hurting myself than pushing the limits.

My normal bench press partner wasn’t there so I went at it solo with much fewer reps than normal.  I can still feel some pain in that left shoulder as the weight gets higher and the reps become more numerous.  I also cut my dumbbell incline reps short due to more pain in the same spot.  Finally I also have been feeling like a minor tendonitis flare up in my left forearm despite doing my daily stretching routine I outlined on YouTube a couple years back.  I feel a pull across the top of the forearm/elbow doing pull ups.

All of these annoying pains was compounded by a general lack of motivation I was feeling for whatever reason.  It all added up to a pile of a suck.

Today’s Workout

5 minutes cardio/stretching

Barbell bench press – 135lbs x 10, 185lbs x 5, 225lbs x 1, 205lbs x 5, 185lbs x 8, 135lbs x 12

Cybex pec dec – 100lbs x 12, 110lbs x 10, 130lbs x 8

Incline dumbbell chest press – 50lbs x 12, 65lbs x 5 (pain)

15 pull ups

Cable row – 130lbs x 10, 160lbs x 8, 190lbs x 4

Glutton for punishment

people-running-clipart-RcA8K9RcL[1]So despite my IT band issues I decided to run another 20 minutes at the gym today as part of my brick.  Last week I hurt after running but not as much as the last time so I called that progress.  Today hopefully will be the next step.

The first 5 minutes or so of running had some clear dull pain shooting down my right leg with every stride.  As my body warmed up that went away.  I again kept my pace a slow and steady 6 MPH as at this point it’s all about just moving and has nothing to do with distance or speed.

Afterward I stretched for the second time, hoping once again to keep my day after discomfort levels at a more reasonable level.  We will see how successful I was 24 hours from now.

Today’s Workout

5 minutes cardio/stretching

Run , X-trainer Brick

20 minutes treadmill – 2.02 miles covered

10 minutes cross trainer

leg-press-old-school-jack-lalanne[1]Despite my what seems to be permanent lower body aches and pains I trudged through another lower body workout today.  It went fine as I was able to get on the smith machine for squats for the second consecutive week, a minor miracle.  I did do the full 210 pound stack of weights on the Cybex leg extension.  It isn’t that hard to full stack a number of machines at Planet Fitness since most of them are designed for the casual gym enthusiast.

Today’s Workout

5 minutes cardio/stretching

20 pull ups

Smith machine squats – 135lbs x 10, 185lbs x 10, 225lbs x 3, 205lbs x 5, 135lbs x 12

Seated leg extension – 110lbs x 10, 130lbs x 10, 210lbs x 3

Seated leg curl – 100lbs x 10, 120lbs x 10, 140lbs x 9

Seated rotary calf extension – 170lbs x 10, 250lbs x 8, 310lbs x 6

Sedentary

PECM[1]Thanks to almost non-stop rain all weekend long I had a very sedentary couple of days.  Don’t get me wrong, I very rarely give myself an opportunity to do a lot of nothing so it was a nice little change up.  Even so there is no escaping the lazy feeling if I don’t hit the imaginary exertion quota that is in my head.

Today is normally bench press day but both benches were occupied.  My gym buddy and I did other chest focused movements to fill the void.  At the end we were doing sets on the pec deck with 20 push ups super-setted in between.  That was a nice way to burn out of the workout.

Today’s Workout

5 minutes cardio/stretching

20 pull ups

Dumbbell chest press – 50lbs x 10, 70lbs x 10, 75lbs x 10, 75lbs x 10

Dumbbell pull overs – 50lbs x 10, 60lbs x 10, 70lbs x 10

Pec dec – 110lbs x 12

20 push ups

Pec dec – 130lbs x 10

20 push ups

Pec dec – 150lbs x 8

20 push ups

Dizzy

thumb_COLOURBOX8355168[1] Today was a mediocre core session that was fronted with a set of 20 pull ups followed by 50 push ups.  I really should try to tack 20-25 dips on the back end as well.  As I was winding down the workout I did a weak L-sit off one of the benches.  Because I was already fatigued the exertion to even hold a poor L-sit for 10 second felt intense.  When I released it I felt light headed and dizzy.    Seeing stars and feeling fuzzy headed is something I have experienced before at the gym but it typically follows heavy squats or dead lifts, not a bodyweight movement.

Today’s Workout

5 minutes cardio/stretching

20 pull ups

50 push ups

30 hanging knee raises

30 second one arm dead hang, both arms

60 second 6 inch floor leg raise hold

Cybex straight arm ab machine – 130lbs x 10

30 hanging knee raises

45 pound side raises x 10

Standing stiff arm trunk rotations x 20

10 second L-sit
