Juicing, normal mode, today’s GUTS.

So this past weekend my wife and I started messing around with our juicer.  We tried several vegetable and fruit juice combinations.  For the most part they were pretty good.  I made the mistake of adding a large chunk of ginger to one of my mixtures.  It tasted disgusting, like drinking a citronella candle.  I later read that when you use ginger you are supposed to use a much smaller piece, no more than a centimeter long.  Mine was about the size of my thumb.  Regardless, I will not be adding any more ginger to my juices.

Although juicing is sort of fun there is no denying it is a lot of work.  This morning my wife and I spent probably damn close to a half hour just preparing about a quart of fruit juice for her (blackberries, strawberries, blueberries, kiwi and apple)  All of the fruit has to be washed first.  The juicer also needs to be immediately cleaned else the pulp will dry like cement in no time.

Luckily cleaning the juicer is pretty easy although cleaning the steel strainer basket takes some extra effort.  Our intiial intent of doing a 24/7 juice fast has mutated based on our experience so far.  I think instead we will juicing to replace certain meals and filling in the non-juiced meals with some healthier choices.

Just having juiced dinners for two days dropped my night time weight to the lowest number ever, 168 pounds.

Over the weekend I posted my first normal mode attempt at this month’s Bar-barian challenge, 5 sets of max rep diamond push ups.  I totaled 105 reps, not a great number.  The only thing I can hang my hat on is most of my reps, especially from sets 2 through 5 were slow and controlled.  Some of the guys posting huge numbers are bouncing up and down so fast it is hard to even count them.

Today’s GUTS session at the gym was hit and miss.  They moved the dip bars so they are parallel to the mirrors, allowing me to clearly see my form which is good.  Unfortunately I wasn’t all that pleased what I saw, my top extension still was not good enough.  So I adjusted and really concentrated on hitting the top of the movement as you should.  Of course this fatigued me faster resulting in a few less reps.

On the plus side I bumped my pull ups back to 20 reps and felt pretty strong in doing so.  I followed up with a new high in push ups, repping out 45 although that was just the end result of patience as I held the top position long enough so I could squeeze out those extra reps.

Banging out those extra push ups really destroyed my attempted bench press session afterward.  135 pounds felt monumentally heavy.  When I dumped 185 on the bar I quit after they very first rep,  I just had no strength left in my chest.  Before I started doing GUTS before my bench sessions I was doing 3 sets of 5 reps at 205 pounds. I’ll take the small ego hit of smaller bench numbers if it helps me get closer to my ultimate goal of doing the BBR’s.

Rick made me an official moderator of the Bar-barian forums yesterday which is very cool.  I really enjoy helping out on the forums and supporting the bar community.

January 2K12 Challenge

I made my first attempt at normal mode for this month’s Bar-barian challenge which is 5 sets of max rep diamond push ups wit 60 second breaks in between sets.  I was luke warm about my results, not grat, not terrible.  When you compare my sets to some of the guys on the forum who can rocket up and down, I look like I am in slow motion. I totalled 105 reps with my sets broken down as 41-20-15-14-15

5 minute warm up

I have read about the 5 minute warm up that some of the Bar-barians do, including Zef.  Zef’s “warm ups” make me laugh because when I try them I wind up feeling spent, not warmed up. 🙂

So anyway the 5 minute warm up is supposed to be 50 pull ups and 100 push ups broken into however may sets you want, as long as you can do it all in under 300 seconds.

My concern going in was if I try to hit big numbers in my sets early I would gas later and be taking breaks that I didn’t have time to take. I decided I was going to break it into 10 sets of 5 pull ups followed by 10 push ups.

Halfway through the attempt (25 pull ups/50 push ups) I was at the 2:20 mark.  Unfortunately as one would expect as the reps got higher the sets went slower.  I didn’t take any appreciable break between any of the sets but my slower rep pace and all of those transitions added up.  I wound up finishing the 150 reps at almost exactly the 7 minute mark, mildly disappointing.

Still in the big picture doing that many pull ups and push ups in that short of a time period is a good showing, something I definitely could not have done a year ago.

The next time I try it I obviously am going to have to do some bigger sets.  With only 5 minutes there is just no time for 20 transitions. (as Sai predicted)

Got the shirt now time to get into the dirt

Yesterday in the mail I received a Bar-barians shirt from Zef.  It was in recognition for the time I put in organizing/running the monthly contests on the Bar-barian message boards.

I am obviously very excited about the shirt but even more so for the recognition from one of the biggest stars in the body weight exercise community.

I originally proclaimed that I wouldn’t even wear the shirt until I could at least complete the old BBR requirements even though the silver emblem designates this isn’t a BBR shirt.  The elite few that complete the BBR’s get a shirt with a GOLD emblem.

Well Zef said he would be honored to see me wearing the shirt in one of my upcoming videos so of course I will be happy to oblige.

I feel very lucky to be able to both give and take from the online group of like minded individuals that understand that real fitness isn’t a chore, it’s a choice to engage your limits.

BBR “Guts”

One of my 2012 fitness goals is to be able to complete the BBR’s (Bar-barian Requirements)  The requirements are as follows:

5 muscle ups
45 body weight dips
25 pull ups
55 push ups
5 muscle ups

The sets need to be continuous (can’t drop off the bar after 15 and then do another 10), utilize good form (hitting the L on dips and push ups, chin to bar with good extension on pull ups), and to be declared a true Bar-barian it all needs to happen in no more than 6 minutes of time, including rest between sets.

It is a tall order for anyone to accomplish, not to mention some middle aged guy that has a body more suited to basketball than elite body weight skills.

Anyway, to start the long climb I have been doing a self proclaimed “guts” program prior to each work out at the gym.  Guts designates the three middle exercises of the BBR’s, dips, pull ups and push ups.  I have been trying to do my one continuous set max for each exercise back to back with minimal rest.

My numbers have been slowly creeping up, right now I am at 36 dips, 20 pull ups and 43 push ups.  It is pretty amazing just how tired you can get in the span of a few minutes maxing these three movements out in succession.

I am tracking my progress here, you are free to check it out.
