Today I had another funny visual.  Back in the 80’s I recall going to gyms that had “neck machines”.  They utilized something that reminded me of a toe cage used for biking except head sized.  You put the strap around your head while seated and then moved it around in various directions. Of course that was in the days when people didn’t think about just how gross it was to put their head in the same sweaty device thousands of others had before them.  I suppose the exercise was designed to give you that big, thick linebacker neck.  I may have tried it a time or two but it just felt ineffective and sort of silly.

So today as I am warming up I spot an old man by one of the cable machines.  He is standing upright.  He had something around his head and was doing neck movements with resistance to the side.  I knew the gym did not have head gear.  As I focused I realize he has taken one of the single handles with a rubber grip and fabric strapping and jammed his head through it.  The rubber handle was towards his forehead, acting like an indoor sun visor.  I couldn’t help but stare from a distance at the spectacle as he bounced his head left and right.

I have been trying to get my weekend run done on Saturdays for awhile but this past weekend I didn’t get a chance to run until Sunday. Today I realized why running Saturday is better, it gives me an extra day to shake any post run soreness out of my legs.  I definitely could feel it doing lower body today, including a little mild pain in the right knee.  I worked through it and threw an extra 5 pounds on my DL to keep up the theme of matching making recent PR’s this week.  The 360 pound pull left me a little light headed but I didn’t have any stars in my field of vision.

Man, Planet Fitness must be a horrible place to work.  Their staff has turned over so many times since Hurricane Irma it has been amazing.  They must be paying at a minimum wage level.  I just don’t understand operations that treat employees like disposable silverware.  To me an employee that is paid better is more likely to perform at a higher level because they value their compensation.  When you pay employees minimum wage there is absolutely no reason for them care about or stay at a job when there are countless other opportunities.  I can tell you as a 30 year gym patron that staff continuity and friendly interactions goes a long way towards my overall impression of a gym.  Hence why one of the tags in this post is “planet fitness sucks”.
