I have talked several times about how my strength seems to mysteriously go up and down for no apparent reason. Well it seems like I am at one of those apex points right now. During smith bench press today I told my buddy to throw a 25 pound plate onto the bar that had two 45 pounders already on each side. This particular smith has an empty bar weight of 20 pounds. I managed to do a solid single rep that just barely touched my chest with no bounce whatsoever. The bar kept moving the entire time and although it was far from easy, it was under control. So if my math is correct it was a 250 pound press which matches my PR for the last decade. It’s a smith machine so I know it can’t be compared in difficulty to a raw bench press but hey, it’s more weight than I used to be able to do. At 50 years old you have to take your victories where you can get them.
