Juicing

Yesterday we received the Breville Juicer we ordered last week.  The purchase came about after my wife and I watched Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead, a documentary about an Australian guy who was a 300+ pound mess.  He went on a strict 60 day juice fast and had some pretty remarkable results.

Now if you have seen me, you know that I have no need to lose weight, yet I still have interest in doing a 10 day trial fast.  If you are overweight you will definitely lose weight on the plan but even if you aren’t trying to drop a few pounds, eating pure, raw, juiced food has a mountain of health benefits.

My wife who already is a vegetarian, is on board with trying the 10 day juice fast as well.  She is even considering using it as a launching pad to go full vegan which is REALLY restrictive.

It will be interesting to see how our little experiment goes.  The reports I have read from others doing similar short term juice fasts are the first couple days are pretty miserable as you adjust to a non-chewing diet.  However almost universally people report that by the end of the fast they feel fantastic.

Current endurance goal

In addition to doing body weight exercise I also participate in various endurance activities including running and multi-sport events like triathlons.  My next targeted event is the Hooter’s Half Marathon in early March.  I ran this last year and posted a less than fantastic time of 2:11:28.  I was conservative running the race since I had never run that distance before, I wanted to make sure I didn’t run out of gas.

This year I have set an internal goal of breaking the two hour mark which would be a major improvement.  Endurance training normally takes a back seat to my body weight work.  To make that goal I am going to have to bump running higher up in the priority list.  Lately I have been only running once a week which isn’t enough to make much progress.

First muscle up on rings

Back in September I was ecstatic when  I finally managed to pull off a bar muscle up after a couple years of trying.  On Monday night I followed up by getting my first ever successful muscle up on rings!

Here is the post I made regarding it on my regular blog.  Here is the video.

I have been asked which was easier the first time, a bar muscle up or a muscle up on rings?

Doing the muscle up on a bar  requires strength but it also requires technique.  The technique involves a combination of a properly timed kip and pulling your body upward in such a way that it follows the path of a C, up and around the bar.  In fact if your technique is good, the momentum from your swing/kip can do a lot of the work for you.

A ring muscle up can also be done utilizing a bunch of swing and kip however I didn’t really use much of either on my successful attempt.  The keys to the ring muscle up are a good false grip, a strong/high initial pull, and being able to thrust your shoulders strongly up and over your wrists.

I think the training for a ring muscle up is very similar to a bar muscle up except you do the same exercises like high pulls, dips, slow negatives and jumping assisted MU’s on the rings.

To be honest I haven’t been doing ring work as consistently as I should be which only hurts myself.  Ring exercises do a great job of overall strengthening because you are constantly stabilizing your body while on them.  Getting strong on the rings only means you will be even stronger when you get back on the bar.

I noticed the day after my ring work the tendons in my elbows and forearms were more sore than normal.  I always look at soreness as a good thing, as long as it isn’t severe.  It means my body is learning to do something new.

Thanks for stopping by. I plan to use this site as a tool to share my experiences doing calisthenics / body weight exercise at my advanced age. I hope to fill this with tips based on some of the struggles I have gone through already and am sure to encounter as I move ahead.

Hopefully by sharing my successes and failures I can help others push themselves to achieve whatever their personal best may be.
