Stick to the reps

0[1]I could start the entry off talking about more of the silly things I saw at the gym today. Like the old man that was napping in between sets of standing tricep extensions or the other old guy that came in the same area and lifted his shirt above his nipples to inspect his golden brown, portly physique in the mirror, but I won’t talk about that.

I did mostly core today, part of which was using this Cybex machine which I never tried before.  From a distance you would think you are pulling the handles.  In reality you are locking out your arms and pushing against the handles, ideally only using your core to do so.  At first I was skeptical but after three sets on there I am a believer.  It felt more effective than the older style ab crunch machines where you grab handles up around your ears and try to pull your elbows to your knees.

Today’s Workout

5 minutes cardio/stretching

20 pull ups

20 hanging knee raises

10 stiff legged p-bar raises

60 second extended reach plank

60 second wall hand stand

10 chin ups

30 second frog sit

20 hanging knee raises

10 stiff legged p-bar raises

60 second extended reach plank

10 parallel grip pull ups

60 second one hand side plank – both sides

Cybex stiff arm ab machine – 110lbs x 10, 130lbs x 8, 150lbs x 6

60 second wide wall handstand hold

60 second frog sit

Run anyway

50tireflipsToday at the gym I did a run/row brick.  Once again I have had some lower body aches and pains that made unsure if I could run.  Those pains certainly weren’t helped my the 50 tire flips I did at home yesterday for my gym session. On Sunday Cindy and I put in another 20 mile bike ride to Dunkin Donuts, averaging a strong (for us) 18.8 mph.

It was the first run/row brick I have done in quite awhile and it felt like it.  By the end of the 30 minutes of hard cardio I was sweating up a storm.  At the bottom of the page I will link the two videos I shot yesterday, one of the tire flipping and another of another 50 reps of my 1000 pull up challenge series.

Today’s Workout

Run/Row Brick

20 minutes on treadmill – 2.24 miles

10 minutes Concept 2 rower – 2198 meters

Jersey Shore, Spot Me

bench_1[1]As I was working through multiple bench press sets I heard very loud and irritated yelling from the back corner of the gym.  I looked that direction expecting to see two guys arguing about who stepped in front of who to use a machine.  Instead I saw some guy that looked like he was straight off the cast of Jersey Shore screaming at someone on his phone.  It was literally loud enough that the entire gym could hear him.  He completed his douchebag imagery by lighting up a cigarette the second he stepped out the door of the gym.

So today my gym buddy and I were scheduled to begin our good natured bench press competition.  I have known Derek forever, dating back to my days at Powerhouse Gym in the early 2000’s.  We have always been at similar levels bench press wise.  Before I left Royal Fitness he and I had started another competition that saw our one rep max get up to 240 pounds. (I am currently at 220-225 on a good day)  So anyway, since we both have found ourselves now at Planet Fitness we have renewed the competition starting today.

At first it looked like bench pressing was off the menu completely as two guys were slogging around on both benches for a long period of time. Derek and I went over and did three sets of dumbbell chest press, maxing out with 10 reps with 75’s the highest weight dumbbell PF has.  After the 3rd set we saw the benches were free so we hopped back over there.

Normally our bench work will always include a 1RM attempt.  With us pre-fatiguing ourselves with the dumbbells we weren’t going to be doing any one rep maxxing, we kept the weight lower, not exceeding 185 pounds, a little more than what both Derek and I weigh.  This friendly rivalry is a good thing for both of us, I fought through and completed reps I never would dare attempt on my own, driven to beat Derek’s number each time by one if possible.   I am competitive after all.

I managed to beat or equal him on most every set and on ties I still gave myself the slight nod because I was doing full extension reps where Derek sometimes will drop into fast and very short “d-ball” (short for dynabol) reps  where the elbows never extend past a 90 degree angle.  Regardless, having us work against yet supporting each other should be a positive thing for our numbers moving forward and upward.

My chest is going to be incredibly sore the next two days.

Today’s Workout

5 minutes stretching

Dumbbell flat bench press 60lbs x 11, 65lbs x 10, 75lbs x 10

Barbell bench press – 135lbs x 10, 185lbs x 8, 185lbs x 6, 185lbs x 6, 185lbs x 5, 185lbs x 5, 135lbs x 10

germs[1]So as I am setting up a mat to do dragon flags on an old guy with head phones  comes back to use the prone leg curl machine that is in the same area.  In his hand was one of the many sanitizing spray bottles around Planet Fitness and a fistful of paper towels.  He proceeds to squeeze the trigger at least 20 times, soaking the machine better than most automatic car washes.

The solution was running off the pads like a waterfall.  He needed every single one of that fistful of paper towels to wipe up that mess.  If he repeats this process for every single machine he uses at PF his workouts must be very long and very wet.  Sure I am courteous and wipe down surfaces with sanitizer when I am done with a machine, but I have no illusion that doing so is protecting me from the cornucopia of bacteria and germs that inhabit any crowded space that houses a bunch of sweaty people.

Today’s Workout

5 minutes cardio/stretching

50 push ups

20 hanging knee raises

5 dragon flags

20 dowel rod rotations

5 dragon flags

Standing 1 arm side raises – 45lbs x 10 (both sides)

3 dragon flags

10 pull ups

20 hanging knee raises

10 pull ups

20 hanging knee raises

1 arm wall handstand hold – 15 secs (both hands)

Wall handstand hold – 60 secs

Never a shortage

Anchorman_3133786b[1]Another benefit of going to Planet Fitness is there is ALWAYS good people watching to be done in between sets.  The mostly elderly crowd this time of year simply do some very entertaining things on machines.  My favorite today was the old guy on a cable machine with a handle on it.  The pulley was high and he was jerking on the stack of weight that was clearly too heavy for him.  He was pulsating the weight up and down a couple inches.  His arm was in a stationary position during the movement, he was just moving the shoulder joint to move the weight.  I think this was his interpretation of a tricep exercise.

I mixed my exercises between back, bicep, tricep and shoulder movements.

Today’s Workout

5 minutes cardio/stretching

19 pull ups

Standing cable machine curls – 80lbs x 12

Standing cable machine tricep push downs – 100lbs x 12

Standing cable machine curls – 90lbs x 10

Standing cable machine tricep push downs – 110lbs x 10

Standing cable machine curls – 100lbs x 10

Standing cable machine tricep push downs – 130lbs x 8

Cybex rotary shoulder press – 80lbs x 12

Standing dumbbell shoulder shrugs – 140lbs x 12

Standing single arm low to high cable pull – 20lbs x 8

Cybex rotary shoulder press – 110lbs x 10

Standing dumbbell shoulder shrugs – 150lbs x 10

Standing single arm low to high cable pull – 20lbs x 8

Cybex rotary shoulder press – 140lbs x 7

Standing dumbbell shoulder shrugs – 150lbs x 10

Rear delt machine – 100lbs x 10

13 pull ups
