Solo, THAT guy, flattered

7-reasons-to-stop-using-your-phone-at-the-gymToday at the gym my bench press partner was not there but one bench was free so I pressed on solo.  I did less bench sets than if he was there and used the extra time to do some other chest work.

While I was doing my reps I found myself in close vicinity to one of the gym creatures that I absolutely can not stand, the hardcore texting addict.  This full bearded guy who I would guess was in his early 30’s would do a few unimpressive reps and then occupy various pieces of equipments for ridiculous amounts of time tapping away on his phone.  It was one of the most egregious examples of this stupid habit I have seen to date and almost made me wish that this was one of the rules the Planet Fitness staff actually enforced. (it’s posted)  I mean really, if futzing with your phone is THAT important to you go sit in your car instead of on equipment at the gym people may wish to use for its intended purpose.

I had one more pretty odd interaction at the gym today which will certainly be interpreted by some as tooting my own horn.  However I share most aspects of my life here so this story is worth telling.

A petite older woman came up to me while I was in between sets on the pec dec.  If I were to guess she was maybe around 60 years old.  She smiled and said “This is embarrassing..”  I immediately assumed she was going to ask me to help her adjust something or lift something heavy.  Instead she pauses, smiles some more and says “I have seen you around the gym for awhile…” My mind then flips gears and I am wondering if this woman is now going to ask me out on a date.  She continues “I told my 30 year old daughter about you and was wondering if you were currently single”

I was the one that paused for a second as I tried to wrap my head around what was going on.  Now it was my turn to smile as I said “First I am very flattered you would consider me for your 30 year old daughter since I am 47”  She was surprised by my age revelation, she told her daughter she guessed I was around 38 or so.  “Second, I have been living with my girlfriend for over a year and am very happy”.

We talked for a bit, I asked her name and told her mine.  At the end of the brief chat I told her again I appreciated and was flattered by her asking me.  Not many mom’s would go up to a complete stranger and ask them if they were single on their daughter’s behalf. There is no denying that her thinking I was a viable suitor for her daughter that is 17 years my junior was a nice little feather in the cap.

squat-bench-dead[1]Today was an oddball Friday workout because it was a non-standard week.  Today was only my second gym appearance of the week.    I had decided ahead of time I wanted to do some smith machine squats so they wouldn’t paralyze me next week.

I didn’t expect to do any benching but that plan changed when my bench press buddy was there loading plates on the bar.  I had not seen him all week because of the whacky schedule.  Well despite doing a bunch of dumbbell chest work Wednesday and five sets of push ups last night as part of an untimed Ray’s Way, I decided to do some benching as well.

As expected, my bench was not that strong, my chest was still in recovery mode.  It felt good to get a nice mix of work in, including a number of static L-sit holds, a movement that had faded into the background of my routines.

Today’s Workout

5 minutes cardio/stretching

Barbell bench press – 135lbs x 10

Smith machine squat – 135lbs x 10

Barbell bench press – 225lbs x 1

Smith machine squat – 185lbs x 8

Barbell bench press – 235lbs x 1

Smith machine squat – 205lbs x 6

Barbell bench press – 185lbs x 9

Barbell bench press – 185lbs x 7

one-arm-dumbbell-floor-press[1]Today I was unable to get on the bench presses at Planet Fitness.  One of the two of them was being cannibalized by some guy using the olympic bar for floor work.  I find it rather dumb that the place does not have even one extra olympic bar that could be used for that kind of stuff.  I was pressed into doing nothing but dumbbell chest press work which was ok, but again limited by PF only having dumbbells up to 75 pounds.  I did three sets of 10 at the 75 pound weight to burn up my chest.

At the end of the workout I did some one arm dumbbell chest press, a move another guy was doing at the same time.  Seeing him do the movement motivated me.  I used to do one arm lifts pretty regularly.  The weight imbalance causes you to compensate with your core which obviously is a good thing.  Since I inserted sets of 10 pull ups in between each chest set I emerged from the gym well burned out.

Today’s Workout

5 minutes cardio/stretching

Dumbbell chest press 50lbs x 12

10 pull ups

Dumbbell chest press 70lbs x 10

10 pull ups

Dumbbell chest press 75lbs x 10

10 pull ups

Dumbbell chest press 75lbs x 10

10 pull ups

Dumbbell chest press 75lbs x 10

10 pull ups

One arm dumbbell chest press 60lbs x 10

10 pull ups

One arm dumbbell chest press 65lbs x 10

10 pull ups

One arm dumbbell chest press 75lbs x 6

advanced-frog-stand[1]Today was a somewhat unconventional Friday workout which usually is all core.  I did weighted pull ups early in the workout instead of late like last week.   Moving them earlier in the workout seemed to generate better numbers which made me feel less depressed about last weeks pulls. I also threw in some elbow planche and frog stand holds for fun.

Today’s Workout

5 minutes cardio/stretching

10 pull ups

20 hanging knee raises

40 lb weighted pull up x 5

20 hanging knee raises

50lbs weighted pull up x 4

20 hanging knee raises

60lbs weighted pull up x 2

10 pull ups

30 second elbow planche hold

30 second frog stand

30 second elbow planche hold

30 second frog stand

30 second elbow planche hold

30 second frog stand

6 inch leg raise hold x 60 seconds x 3

1 arm dead hang hold – 30 secs each arm

Power tower stiff legged raises (on elbows) – 10 resp x 3 sets

trigger-point-it-band[1]So there has been some push back from my reintroduction of running into my routine, as I knew there would be.  Last night my IT band on my right side felt super tight.  I got out my roller and rolled the area.  The pain from doing so is enough that I can’t keep quiet during the process but afterward I did feel some relief.  Today however the band once again feels tight which will require more painful rolling tonight.

When I woke up this morning my knee, although it did feel somewhat stiff and sore, was not my primary source of discomfort.  The lower right quadrant of my back hurt like hell, causing me to walk around like an old man.  Surely this is yet another byproduct of the tight IT band and running.  Today at the gym I stuck to upper body activities to bypass the discomfort the best I could.

Today’s Workout

5 minutes cardio/stretching

50 push ups

20 hanging knee raises

6 belly to wall handstand push ups

Seated dumbbell curls 25lbs x 12

Bodyweight dips x 20

Seated dumbbell curls 40lbs x 8

Bodyweight dips + 40lbs x 8

Seated dumbbell curls 50lbs x 4

Bodyweight dips + 60lbs x 4

Cybex seated bicep curl – 80lbs x 10

Standing smith machine rear shoulder shrugs – 225lbs x 10

Standing smith machine front shoulder shrugs – 225lbs x 10

Standing smith machine rear shoulder shrugs – 315lbs x 5

Standing smith machine front shoulder shrugs – 315lbs x 5

Cybex seated bicep curl – 100lbs x 8
