So when I go to the gym I will usually hit the bathroom before and after my workout to make sure my tank is empty. When I went in after arriving there was a late middle aged man with the classic male pattern baldness circle. He was sitting on one of the benches in front of the lockers with one foot up on the bench, taking up more space than he needed to.
He was on his smart phone and appeared to be deeply engaged in it, seemingly oblivious to everything and everyone around him. No, he was not naked, he was in what I assume were his gym clothes, which consisted of a t-shirt and shorts. Seeing older people on smart phones is not unusual, the addiction is certainly not limited to millennials.
So I made mental note of this man but had no intentions of including him in my blog entry, until I reentered the bathroom, after my roughly 40 minute workout. The same man was in the same spot, in the same body position, deeply involved with the same phone, with the only difference being he was now only wearing his blue underwear. My conclusion was he spent my entire workout f’ing around on his phone in the locker room, spare a few seconds to remove two articles of clothing. He finally put the phone down as I was leaving and entered the shower.

I see all sorts of ridiculous usage of smart phones at the gym on a daily basis where individuals seem to be physically incapable to not interact with the device more than a few moments at a time. To me, smart phone addiction is a very sad byproduct of the tech infused society we have become. I remain old school and leave my phone at the office when I hit the gym.
So at this age any progress seems to be like the title of this entry, walking up a down escalator, meaning despite consistent effort, any progress upward is slow. I made some tiny progress on my Smith dead lift this week adding 5 pounds to my total, bringing it up to 360 pounds for a 1RM. The sensations that go through my body when pulling heavier weight like this can be a bit disconcerting. It is not uncommon for stars to enter my field of vision as well as feeling light headed during the max effort portion of the lift.
Before Retro closed you may recall me reporting how someone I used to talk to once in awhile actually died on the Smith machine there doing heavy shrugs. He had a brain aneurysm. I often think of him and what happened before I do these heavy lifts. I think about dying at the gym and how that fits into my ideal scenarios of checking out of the planet. It really isn’t a bad option if it’s just a quick exit. Sure it may traumatize fellow gym goers for a bit but it would give them something worth putting down the smart phone for a few seconds and talk about over dinner.
