First PF legs

I did my first lower body weight training for my third stint as a Planet Fitness member.   For my compund lower body movement I did the plate loaded leg press sled which evidently is much tougher than the pivot type leg press they had at Retro.  I started seeing stars with only 5 plates on each side, something that used to take six plates per side to happen with the other press.  Other than that things went fine.  I have noticed the three smith machines, that are my only half decent option for barbell chest pushing movements are almost always in use, something that could get quite annoying down the road and a byproduct of the chain stupidly pulling the few conventional barbell benches they had remaining.

Today’s Workout

5 minutes cardio/stretching

Leg press sled – 225lbs x 10, 315lbs x 10, 405lbs x 8, 495lbs x 3

Seated leg extension – 110lbs x 10

Seated leg curl – 100lbs x 10

Seated calf extension – 210lbs x 10

Seated leg extension – 130lbs x 10

Seated leg curl – 120lbs x 10

Seated calf extension – 250lbs x 10

Seated leg extension – 150lbs x 10

Seated leg curl – 140lbs x 8

Seated calf extension – 290lbs x 10

At least it doesn’t work

So one of the most ridiculous things about Planet Fitness has always been the infamous Lunk Alarm, a wall mounted siren and light that goes off when “lunk” behavior occurs, most often dropping weights or anything that creates a lot of noise.  I have seen examples of just loud grunting setting it off.  The last time I was a member of Planet Fitness the staff said the lunk alarm was not even connected anymore but still on the wall in front of the free weight area.  I never heard it go off during my second term as a PF member. (it did the first time I joined)

Well I am happy to report that it still must be disconnected based on the circumstances I saw today.  Some man was using the cable machine to do standing chest fly.  He would grab each handle and then walk his body forward a good foot or two.  After he completed each set he couldn’t be bothered with returning the handles to the starting position in a controlled manner.  Instead he would let go with the weight stack a good 6-12 inches suspended over the unused weights, causing them to crash loudly, much louder than normal lunk alarm tolerances.  The siren remained silent which I was happy to hear however I was not happy this idiot was using a weight stack as cymbals.  After he got a couple doses of WTF stinkeye from myself and others he was a little more orderly at the end of his sets.

The noise is one thing but the real problem is doing shit like that breaks the equipment which affects everyone else in the gym that wants to use it.  I have ranted on here long and hard about people that treat a public space like a gym as their own personal domain.  Be courteous you f’in morons, it isn’t that difficult.

I used some of the new Hammer Strength equipment today as part of shoulder and back day.  It seemed to be pretty solid and functional.

Supinated grip seated pull downs – 170lbs x 10

Groundhogs Day

SO I was back at Planet Fitness for my third go round.  I saw my bench press buddy and we both agreed we couldn’t believe we were back here again, the gym we have tried to get away from repeatedly.  I should be fair however in assessing the current state of our local Planet Fitness.

Let’s handle the negatives first.  The shopping plaza it resides in sucks.  It’s old, has a lousy parking lot and is generally a pain in the ass to get into and out of.  The litany of rules they hand you when you sign up is hilarious, with the old favorites like no grunting, no dropping weights, no swearing, etc. are ironic since PF is supposedly the “Judgement Free” zone.  The lack of any bench press equipment or squat racks is annoying as hell.  I also realized that since I was last there they removed additional stuff I used to use like the Power Tower and the split cable machine that had a pull up bar in between, leaving me precious few options for pull ups.  The free weight area is small and could easily have what you want to use unavailable.

On the plus side, the staff is generally friendly and not surfing their phone with their heads down 95% of the time.  The gym space is kept relatively clean.  The new machines they brought in are high quality plate loaded Hammer Strength stuff.  In general all of the equipment they have is higher quality than what I was accustomed to at Retro and I did not see a single thing that was out of order.  There are more areas to do stretching and bodyweight work on the main gym floor than there was at Retro as well.

So anyway it’s not all bad at Planet Fitness but nonetheless, I will be looking to take my first legitimate alternative as soon as it presents itself.  It’s a pain having to adjust to all the new machines.  What used to be 80 pounds of effort on one machine might translate to 65 pounds on another depending on the pulleys used and leverage applied.

Today’s Workout

5 minutes cardio/stretching

Strict chin ups x 10

Seated one arm overhead dumbbell tricep extension – 20lbs x 12

Strict chin ups x 10

Seated one arm overhead dumbbell tricep extension – 25lbs x 10

Confirmed

So even though I was 99% sure the doors at Retro would be locked I went anyway, just to confirm.  The lights were on but no members were inside, only some grumpy looking woman looking at stacks of paper.  I hopped back in the truck and headed over to my least favorite gym, Planet Fitness.  In some ways, I am a bit tougher on PF that I should be because they do have some things going on that I do appreciate at a gym.  The staff is friendly, the equipment is in good working order, and the place is kept clean.  Where I get turned off is the lack of conventional gym equipment like bench presses, squat racks, and barbells.  Then you mix in their long list of silly rules and the infamous Lunk Alarm and you now have a “fake gym”.

While the woman was processing my paperwork I did a quick lap around the place to see what changed.  As I was already told they removed all of the barbell based benches like flat bench, incline bench, and shoulder press.  These were replaced by even more weight machines which at least looked to be decent quality.

One perk from getting bent over by Retro was Planet Fitness was waving the $10 sign up fee for all Retro cast offs.  I then got another month for free because my bench press buddy came walking in after me, the clerk counted him as my referral, qualifying me for the spiff. I also did not have to do a one year agreement meaning I can bail at anytime without a penalty which is good.

I decided I didn’t want to actually do a workout today since half my lunch hour was already over.  I instead had packed my electric unicycle so I went for a quick ride at Sugden Park. So tomorrow my third adventure in the lunk-free Planet Fitness world begins, I can hardly wait, for it to end.

Go out with a bang

So I was of course worried if the lights would be on at the gym today with the recent events of the last week or so where the fate of the gym seemed to change every day.  Well the lights were indeed still on and the doors were open.  However it was what was on the door that was a big problem, an eviction notice.  Yes the gym is evidently being evicted after all as of tomorrow, despite the repeated reassurances from the manager that this was not the case. Great.

So since it may very well be the last time I ever set foot in the gym I told my bench press buddy I wanted to push it, hoping to get 250 pounds up on the decline bench for the first time ever.  I got 245 cleanly but needed a small spot at 250 to complete the rep which was a bit of a bummer.  I did manage to get 205 for 8 reps on the way down which hasn’t happened in probably a decade so it still felt somewhat significant.

I had so much excitement and hope when this gym first opened in 2010.  It had everything I needed/wanted and was so close to work, it was just about perfect.  I put in a lot of hard work within those walls and it has been disappointing to see the facility suffer through bad ownership and management not once, but twice.  Remember this same gym closed down for roughly six months under the first owner before being reopened in 2015. I feel bad for the staff which relied on the gym as their primary employment.  A lot of these faces I have seen almost every day for the last couple years.  Having it all go away is sad indeed.

So anyway my plan for tomorrow is to drive to Retro to verify it’s closed for real this time.  If the doors are locked then I will be off to shitty Planet Fitness where I will sign up for whatever membership allows me to go month to month so I can escape as soon as another opportunity arises. Adios Retro Fitness, it’s been fun, sometimes.

Today’s Workout

Dumbbell pull overs -55lbs x 10, 70lbs x 10, 80lbs x 6
