Learning the ropes

hqdefault[2]So as I am programmed to do, I am making my longer, more traffic filled drive to the new gym as efficient as possible.  I have already identified the ideal traffic lanes to slide into to make the drive as hassle free as possible.

I also am still working at coming up with an entire new set of things I can do at the Wellness Center thanks to the much larger selection of equipment available.  Today I discovered a perfect spot to do my wall handstand holds and after doing 3 sets I was able to come off the floor without my hands looking black.

There is much more going on at the new place, people buzzing around, fitness classes going on, all in a spacious, modern, clean environment.  It’s quite the contrast to what I had become accustomed to.

Today’s Workout

5 minutes cardio/stretching

60 second wall hand stand hold

Seated dumbbell curls 25lbs x 10

20 dips

60 second wall hand stand hold

Seated dumbbell curls 40lbs x 10

Cable machine standing curls with straight handle 100lbs x 10

Bodyweight tricep extensions x 8

prodotti-77789-rel482f19d8e22d4f81bed96a63b8561d27[1]So day 2 at the new gym was my first time hitting their cardio equipment.  The treadmills definitely are nicer than what I was accustomed to at Royal Fitness.  The TechnoGym treadmills have a nice touch video screen that allows you to keep a full statistical window, a full screen tv picture or a combo view of both (my choice) on the screen at the same time.

The AV selection was nice but I also liked the running platform which felt large and stable.  I was on one of the treadmills in the front row meaning I had a nice second story view out of the huge windows looking down on Tamiami Trail.

The stationary bike I used, another TechnoGym model wasn’t quite as good as the treadmill.  The way things are set up there is no way to get down on your forearms while pedaling to allow more exertion of leg power.  The level to exertion ratio is of course different than the Cybex bike I was riding before.  With the Cybex, a higher difficulty level equated to a a higher virtual gear and thus it adjusted your virtual speed accordingly.  At least so far, I have not figured out how to make the TechnoGym bike do something similar but I think with a little digging around I will figure it out.  With the flat manual settings it showed I only traveled 2.68 miles in 10 minutes instead of the normal 3.25 miles I was showing on the Cybex bike.

The other negative about all of the stationary bikes in the place is none of them have a built in fan which was part of the reason I had a substantial puddle of sweat on the floor by my bike.  (yes I wiped it up afterward)

Today’s Workout

20 minute run / 10 Minute bike training brick

Run distance covered – 2.18 miles

Bike distance covered – 2.68 miles

Soft touch 240, measuring miles

bench[1]So once again at the gym today some genius decided to turn the place into a dance club although the volume level was slightly lower than last time when I had to complain.  I didn’t complain this time, instead I took a little road trip after I left the gym a few minutes early.

First I measured the time and distance it took my to get from my gym back to the parking lot at work.  The 1.7 miles took me 7-8 minutes to traverse.  This time varies depending on how much of a pain in the ass it is to make a left turn across two lanes of traffic that particular day and a few other factors.  I would say the nearly 8 minutes it took today is a worst case scenario.

I then reset my odometer and headed to the NCH Wellness Center, where one of my gym buddies recently relocated to.  It’s about 1.25 miles further away but surprisingly I pulled into their lot in roughly 6 minutes.  In contrast, I seemed to have had a best case scenario, hitting mostly green lights along the way.  Since the Wellness Center is close to downtown Naples this only promises to be more snail-like once snowbird season resumes.

Well at least I had some numbers to work with now.  The last time I checked county employees get a discount off the normally pricey $50 a month membership.  For that money you get a state of the art facility with all the bells and whistles including sauna, steam room, spa, fitness classes and a lap pool.  Granted none of that would normally be used in my lunch time workout sessions but still it’s nice to have the option to do after work if I felt so inclined.

The Wellness center from all reports I have heard is pristine and clean.  In contrast, Royal Fitness is not clean as evidenced by the cobwebs in the corners, the dust bunnies under the equipment and the black hands I wind up with whenever I am doing floor work.  I also highly doubt I have to worry about staff at NCH playing brain maddening loud dance mix tracks. I also would expect they insist any trainers in the facility wear deodorant.  The higher membership price point should also help keep some of the people that annoy me the most out of the facility.

Over the years I have tolerated a number of individual annoying situations at Retro/Royal Fitness. Dirty conditions, cheap barbells that are so bent they wobble when they roll, smelly trainers, ignorant music selection, round robin staff turnover, and more has worn my cumulative patience out.  Perhaps tomorrow I will get my cardio workout in by parking a mile or so away and literally running to and from NCH to check out the facility.  I can join there for a measly 5 extra bucks a month and leave my office a minute or two earlier to negate the mileage difference. If I tack 5 extra minutes onto my lunch my boss won’t bat an eye.

On the positive side I pushed 240 pounds off my chest today.  My spotter buddy had his fingers on the bar when I looked to be struggling although he claimed he applied no upward force whatsoever.  However in my mind that invalidates the lift authenticity.  If any hands other than my own are on that bar it can’t count for real.

Today’s Workout

5 minutes cardio/stretching

Barbell bench press 135lbs x 10, 185lbs x 5, 225lbs x 1, 235lbs x 1, 240lbs x 1, 225lbs x 2, 185lbs x 9, 135lbs x 15

7 minutes A2G hold

CrossFit-Pull-Up[1]Today I rolled with a push pull combo, making the meat of my workout alternating sets of 185lb bench x reps supersetted with sets of 10 pull ups.  It felt like a well balanced upper body effort.

Today’s Workout

5 minutes cardio/stretching

20 pull ups

Barbell bench press 135lbs x 10

10 pull ups

Barbell bench press 185lbs x 8

10 pull ups

Barbell bench press 185lbs x 8

10 pull ups

Barbell bench press 185lbs x 8

10 pull ups

Barbell bench press 185lbs x 8

10 pull ups

Barbell bench press 135lbs x 15

Totals for workout – 70 pull ups (12,950 lbs pulled at 185lb bodyweight)

25 reps at 135 lb bench & 24 reps at 185lb bench (7815lb pushed)

5 minutes A2G hold

1310552547_gump[1]I was out of town for a few days up in PA.  While I was up there I didn’t have much time for organized exercise.  I spent about 30 minutes in a hotel gym where the highlight was doing the entire stack of weights on the chest press machine (supposedly 255lbs).  On Monday I went to Gettysburg with my buddy and got some exercise walking the grounds and climbing several observation towers.  Unfortunately I negated most beenfit from that exercise by drinking huge amounts of beer the night before.

Today I tried to get back in the swing of things with a gym 20/10 training brick.  The 2.18 miles on the treadmill and 3.26 on the bike did not roll by easily. I was sucking wind hard by the end of each portion.

Today’s Workout

20/10 brick

20 minute run – 2.18 miles covered

10 minute ride – 3.26 miles covered
