SO I was back at Planet Fitness for my third go round.  I saw my bench press buddy and we both agreed we couldn’t believe we were back here again, the gym we have tried to get away from repeatedly.  I should be fair however in assessing the current state of our local Planet Fitness.

Let’s handle the negatives first.  The shopping plaza it resides in sucks.  It’s old, has a lousy parking lot and is generally a pain in the ass to get into and out of.  The litany of rules they hand you when you sign up is hilarious, with the old favorites like no grunting, no dropping weights, no swearing, etc. are ironic since PF is supposedly the “Judgement Free” zone.  The lack of any bench press equipment or squat racks is annoying as hell.  I also realized that since I was last there they removed additional stuff I used to use like the Power Tower and the split cable machine that had a pull up bar in between, leaving me precious few options for pull ups.  The free weight area is small and could easily have what you want to use unavailable.

On the plus side, the staff is generally friendly and not surfing their phone with their heads down 95% of the time.  The gym space is kept relatively clean.  The new machines they brought in are high quality plate loaded Hammer Strength stuff.  In general all of the equipment they have is higher quality than what I was accustomed to at Retro and I did not see a single thing that was out of order.  There are more areas to do stretching and bodyweight work on the main gym floor than there was at Retro as well.

So anyway it’s not all bad at Planet Fitness but nonetheless, I will be looking to take my first legitimate alternative as soon as it presents itself.  It’s a pain having to adjust to all the new machines.  What used to be 80 pounds of effort on one machine might translate to 65 pounds on another depending on the pulleys used and leverage applied.
